A bit more about me

Working with children

This is a picture of me working with children in Years 3 and 4.

I go into schools on a regular basis to work with teachers and children.

I write problems for the NRICH website.

I also do some work for BEAM, the primary Maths publisher - see Links.

Here are a few autobiographical odds and ends which might be of interest.

Black and white photograph

I was born shortly before the second World War and so had a war-time childhood.

This photograph was taken when I was about a year old showing four generations - my father, his mother and her father (my great-grandfather).

At present I live in Aldeburgh. I have a holiday flat which I let on my ground floor.

I learnt to cook very young and, unbelievably was left to cook lunch for the family by the time I was nine. There are some recipes in my cooking and food pages.

After taking Biology, History and English at A-level, I went to Bristol University to read History. Here I became interested in the history of food such Medieval recipes.

I even made some grainy mustard from a fifteenth century description and every-one told me it was wrong because it wasn't smooth. It's dreadful to be so ahead of the times! You can find the recipe for this here.

After that I trained to be a primary teacher at Maria Grey, got married and taught for two years in Oxford before Jim and Tavi were born.

I started teaching again when Tavi was two years old. My teaching pages are designed to be useful for primary teachers.

In 1975 I moved to London with Jim and Tavi and taught in a College of Education. Gradually I was teaching more and more Maths Education. I took various courses including an OU degree.

In 1983 I went on exchange in Australia for a year. Here I went to patchwork and quilting classes.
Take a look at my patchwork page. I became interested in the maths behind some quilting designs.

In 1986 I bought a house in Aldeburgh. Two years later I got a job at Aldeburgh Primary School where I taught for a couple of years.

After that I took early retirement, went back to Australia for six weeks, started making quilts for many members of my family. Also some teaching material I had designed was published.

At present I make up mathematical puzzles and problems.

I also visit schools and work alongside teachers doing such things as mathematical investigations, work with calculators and mathematical games.
